Mitohondrijska DNK haplogrupa N je na prostoru bivše Jugoslavije najzastupljenija i najrasprostranjenija u odnosu na ostale. Takođe, ova haplogrupa je i prisutna u visokom postotku u čitavoj Evropi, a značajno je zastupljena i na Bliskom istoku i Kavkazu. Zanimljivo je da se za podgrupu N5 smatra da je nastala na prostoru Balkana, Anadolije ili Levanta (možda i Italije) pre 25-30.000 godina.

Ukupno je prikupljeno 188 uzoraka (baze FTDNA, MitoSearch) sa ovih prostora, od čega njih čak 79 pripada ovoj haplogrupi odnosno 42% ispitanih. Gledajući podgrupe, stanje je sledeće:

* 48 - N (testirani samo HVR1 i HVR2)

* 4 - N2
* 3 - N5
* 2 - N26
* 1 - N4 + N6b + H7 + H15 + H20 + H35a
